A Message from Methuen
Hello everyone! As I sit at my desk writing this article, it is a chance to reflect on my journey with UMASS Lowell and STEM. Both have had a profound impact on me as an educator, provided many opportunities for growth, and have allowed me to be one of the change agents within my district.
Methuen has made many strides over the last year. I have had the privilege to be one of the teachers to pilot a science program and be part of the selection process during the 2006/2008 academic year. As a result, Methuen has adopted a new science program for grades three through eight. In addition, Diana and I have the opportunity to work with Doug Prime in offering a DesignLab program for sixth and seventh grade students in our district. We are both excited about this initiative and hope to one day expand the program within Methuen.
Methuen has also instituted Curriculum Coordinators for grades 7-12 in both math and science. In addition, we also have math coaches in every grammar school. I am fortunate to be one of the math coaches and have the wonderful opportunity to meet, observe, learn, and share the love of math with a wonderful staff and students. It is exciting to see elements of the Methuen STEM team’s plan come to reality. Obviously, the growth in Methuen and in me is through the support of Dr. Rancourt and Methuen’s commitment to STEM.
Currently I am working on my CAGS in school administration and because of my involvement with STEM; I choose an action research project that involves providing the students and families with opportunities to make math connections by offering Family Math Fun Nights. My hope is to dispel the negative attitudes towards math, provide parents with tools for helping their child in math, as well as allow students and parents to explore the varied careers involving math. As an extension, I would like to have a science night next year so I can share my passion for science as well.
